Greetings to all friends of South Africa in the East of England: or, as we say in our various official languages:
Sanibonani Molo Thobela Dumela Lumela Abusheni Sanibona Avuwani Salibonani
I am delighted to welcome you to this website, which can connect you to a range of useful information about South Africa.
As your Honorary Consul, I am working to promote links between the UK and South Africa — boosting trade and investment each way, and encouraging education and cultural association.
You can see a little of my own history elsewhere on these pages. A great joy is to be Honorary Consul in this wonderful part of the UK, as South Africa enters its third decade of freedom. But as we all know, the price of liberty is eternal vigilance. World-wide pressure helped internal forces break through to a modern South Africa; and now world-wide links and investment are helping to enhance and strengthen its rapid development and growth. We are creating these daily, right here in the East of England.
The High Commissioner, Zola Skweyiya, and his economic team toured this region in autumn 2011. From Colchester, through Ipswich and Southwold, to Norwich and Cambridge, the economic, educational and personal connections between the two countries became ever more clear. One after another, people demonstrated their individual, professional, family and business interests in South Africa, and their desire for these to deepen and flourish.
We want to build on these connections and help the two countries reach the target set in 2011, at the ninth UK-South Africa Bilateral Forum in London, to double bilateral trade by 2015. This region, with its flourishing, innovative business and educational strengths, is well placed to work to this target, in which the academic and cultural spheres have a vital role to play.
In 2012, we will establish a Friends of South Africa in the East of England, so please keep an eye on this website to see how you may get involved.
Honorary Consuls are not executive officials of the SA Government, and if you need help with passports, visas, travel or other matters of that kind, please use the links on this website first.
Otherwise, please contact me with your ideas for better UK/SA links, and we will at once try to respond positively.
