I am delighted to be appointed as the Honorary Consul for South Africa to the Midlands region.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1976, I have worked internationally in IT and biotechnology, and in 2005 set-up Trimega Laboratories, a world-leading, Manchester- based company for testing hair for evidence of alcohol and drug abuse, primarily for additional evidence for child custody court cases. Trimega employs 65 people in the UK, South Africa and Germany (www.trimegalabs.co.uk).

The South African High Commission in London has always been extremely supportive of my work, and I am honoured to now have the opportunity to enhance links between the Midlands and South Africa.

There are over 230,000 South Africans in the UK, and I am delighted to be able to serve those who choose to come to the Midlands region to live and work.

This is a very important era for UK-South African relations. In June this year, the ninth UK-South Africa Bilateral Forum, hosted by Foreign Secretary William Hague, re-affirmed the commitment made during President Zuma’s 2010 state visit to the UK to double bilateral trade between the two countries by 2015. The UK Department for International Development committed to invest £76 million between 2011 and 2015 to support the South African government with a range of development initiatives.

I have ambitious plans for promoting investment, business flows, tourism and broader relations between South Africa and the Midlands, and developing cross cultural fertilisation between the two countries. My work has already started, and I look forward to keeping you updated on developments.

Feel free to contact me at any time.

Yours faithfully,

Avi Lasarow
Honorary Consul of the Midlands UK for the Republic of South Africa
